Groasis is a socially active and environmentally conscious company from the Netherlands. In 2003, the company was founded by Pieter Hoff. Pieter used to be a lily breeder and also an importer/exporter of flower bulbs. For his work he traveled across the globe and saw that many problems arose in different areas. For example, his clients complained about the declining groundwater level, deforestation and that there were more eroded and dry areas than ever before. In addition, almost all of his customers used drip irrigation to water the flowers.
Not only the solution had to be found for the dry, eroded and derelict areas. The growing water shortages in the world also had to be considered. The UN says that 700 million people in 43 countries already suffer from water shortages.
At this moment we use about 70 to 85% of the fresh water for agricultural purposes. We need this water to drink and use for purposes other than agriculture. In addition to the water shortages in the world, the world population is growing steadily. Will there be enough water in the future to produce food for everyone?
A new way to plant trees
Pieter thought about a solution where productive trees had to be planted with less water. At the same time, food must be produced in a sustainable and water-saving way. There had to be a way to create more awareness and let people use water in an efficient way?
Pieter found the solution, sold his lily breeding company and focused on the development of the Waterboxx® plant cocoon. More products followed after the Waterboxx® plant cocoon, such as the biodegradable Growboxx® plant cocoon.
You can now successfully plant trees in combination with vegetables, shrubs and flowers with the Groasis Ecological Water Saving Technology. Groasis is working hard to plant the 2 billion hectares of degraded soil in an affordable way.
